GOING FOR CAROLINA: Michelle Obama donned a black and liberty blue Carolina Herrera gown for the State Dinner for French President François Hollande Tuesday night. The dinner drew guests that were a mix of Hollywood, business and the media. Hollywood and music celebs included Bradley Cooper (with Brit model Suki Waterhouse), Stephen Colbert, Mary J. Blige, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cicely Tyson; media land was represented by the likes of Jeff Zucker of CNN, Margaret Russell of Architectural Digest, Joanna Coles of Cosmopolitan, Jill Abramson of The New York Times and Richard Plepler of HBO, and the business world, in addition to the usual hedge funders, bankers and big contributors to the Democratic Party, included Best Buy chief executive officer Hubert Joly, Qualcomm’s Irwin Jacobs, Tesla founder Elon Musk and Marriott Hotels ceo Arne Sorenson. There were a few surprises, though: Rev. Al Sharpton made the cut, as did former NBA commissioner David Stern (given basketball is one of President Obama’s favorite sports) and so did interior decorator Michael S. Smith — who brought along none other than Net-a-porter founder Natalie Massenet.
