Ferré Exhibit Nixed for Milan Showing

The Italian Chamber of Fashion unexpectedly vetoed the exhibit set to show in September.

NO GO: The Milan leg of the traveling exhibition celebrating Gianfranco Ferré’s creative talent and architectural approach, called “La camicia Bianca secondo me. Gianfranco Ferré” (or “My idea of a white shirt. Gianfranco Ferré”) has been nixed by the board of the Italian Chamber of Fashion, despite the endorsement of the association’s chief executive officer Jane Reeve.

Organized by the Milan-based Gianfranco Ferré Foundation, financial details about the exhibit, expected to be held in September during Milan Fashion Week, had already been mapped out, said Rita Airaghi, Ferré’s cousin and director of the foundation.

“I am flabbergasted,” said Airaghi, of the unexpected veto by the chamber’s board. “It’s unjust and very serious.”

It is understood some members of the board feel the exhibition is “inopportune,” she said, as it promotes a firm that is closing manufacturing in Italy under its owner, the Dubai-based Paris Group, and whose future remains uncertain.

“The ignorance of this is surprising. The foundation has nothing to do with the firm,” remarked Airaghi, who has actively continued to preserve the late designer’s aesthetic and cultural patrimony.

The exhibition, showcasing 27 of the most iconic white shirts designed by Ferré from 1982 to 2006, was first unveiled on Feb. 1 at the Textile Museum in Prato, Tuscany, and runs there until the end of June.
