KARL'S NEW PALACE: Karl Lagerfeld wants to make a fairy tale out of Fendi's new fragrance. In Rome on Monday at a party to fete the launch of the new scent Palazzo, the designer unveiled a book with the same name. Featuring a series of photos by Lagerfeld, the hardback — scripted by Amanda Harlech — tells the story of modern Roman princess Allegra, played by model Raquel Zimmermann, in a love triangle with American fiancée Burt (model Brad Kroenig) and Italian ex-flame Bartolomeo (model Jake Davis). Lagerfeld shot the book's images in the 14th-century Palazzo Taverna in January, where he also captured Zimmermann for the advertising campaign. "It was a lot of fun and all of the models really got into their characters by the end," said Lagerfeld just before 100 guests arrived for an exhibition of the photos and dinner in Palazzo Fendi. "Palazzo" will be sold in several independent bookstores, including Colette in Paris.

BLUE TONE: Levi's is making sure its customers dial in style. The company launched its first telephone collection in Paris on Tuesday. Customers can hook their cell phones to their jeans with a metal chain that is provided with the phone. Sold for around 500 euros, or $565, the high-end phone will be available in Levi's stores as well as specialty stores across Europe beginning in September.

MARGIELA REVEALED: WWD reported in April that Maison Martin Margiela will launch a store in Los Angeles this year, but details on the project have surfaced since — including a tentative opening date of mid-August. The company will split a 4,500-square-foot retail space on Little Santa Monica Boulevard in Beverly Hills with 11-year-old designer specialty store Mameg. The two boutiques will be connected from the inside via a short hallway, said Mameg co-owner Sonia Eram.

Mameg, which specializes in fashion-forward labels including Balenciaga, Hussein Chalayan and Véronique Leroy, has been a key account for Margiela in the past, but will stop carrying the brand once it moves from its current location in Brentwood. "We've been working on this move together for over a year," said Eram, who added that the larger company approached her with the idea of pairing up on a shared space. The location will be the second in the U.S. for Maison Martin Margiela, which opened its first U.S. unit in lower Manhattan in December 2005.
HEADING NORTH: Mexican jeweler Colette Steckel has crossed the border with a new namesake Los Angeles store on Melrose Place. "I thought Melrose Place would fit me because it is all big designers, but at the same time not massive designers," said Steckel, who is known by her first name. "I don't pretend to be massive. I like to keep it a couture thing." She has invited longtime celebrity customers such as Salma Hayek and Jessica Alba, as well as more recent fans, including Ana Ortiz, Sara Ramirez and Katherine Heigl, to a party last week to celebrate the opening. Steckel stressed that the 600-square-foot store, stocked with 700 pieces retailing from $500 to $75,000, has jewelry for a variety of tastes. "I hate not to have the right thing for everybody. Let's say you are a small person and you hate big jewelry, but you love my style. If I can't give you anything, it is too frustrating," she lamented. Steckel will return to Mexico City, home to her flagship, for her next store at upscale shopping destination Antara.
