GIRL TALK: François-Henri Pinault is not expected in Milan's front rows this week. That's because the PPR chairman and his fiancée, Salma Hayek, have something more important than fashion to tend to: their new daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault, who was born last Friday in Los Angeles. All are doing fine, according to a Pinault spokesman.

SLIM TIDINGS: Hedi Slimane figures it's time to recalibrate the fashion calendar in an age when collections are posted on the Internet moments after being shown. Slimane made that assertion in an interview published Sunday in French daily Le Monde, his first since exiting Dior Homme last March. "Seasonal collections, shown one year in advance, don't relate to anything anymore," he told the newspaper, also citing a saturation of brands and style propositions. Slimane also expressed skepticism for marketing, and reiterated that a desire to design women's wear ultimately precipitated his parting ways with Dior. "At the end of seven years, I needed a change and wanted to move on and dress women. That wasn't possible at Dior," Slimane said, alluding to John Galliano, who just marked his 10th anniversary as the house's couturier. Slimane reiterated that his unwillingness to give up majority ownership of his brand name stymied negotiations with Dior to launch an Hedi Slimane fashion house and led to his eventual exit. As expected, he asserted having good relations with LVMH titan Bernard Arnault, "for whom I have a great deal of affection."

TEMPERLEY ON TARGET: Alice Temperley's pop-up shop selling her Target collection at Selfridges in London is proving to be a hit. Half of the collection — which includes baby-doll knit dresses and velvet miniskirts — sold out within the first few hours of the store's opening on Tuesday, and the rest was expected to be cleaned out by Sunday, when the shop closed. Bestsellers included a belted knit dress, a ruffled white shirt and a black woolen coat. Prices ranged from about $14 for a wool beret through to $160 for a leather jacket — a fraction of what Temperley's main-line pieces sell for on the store's designer floor.

SPOILER ALERT: Vera Wang is said to have developed yet another incarnation — a cameo on the ABC comedy "Ugly Betty." Last week the designer was spotted in Los Angeles taping a segment about one of the characters' upcoming wedding. Wearing her trademark leggings, Wang reportedly played herself — albeit a nastier version. This won't be her first stab at comedy, having filmed a "Sex and the City" segment years ago. That one, unfortunately, wound up on the cutting room floor.
