Mulleavy Sisters, Take Two

The Mulleavy sisters had reason to have déjà vu at Monday’s Americans for the Arts National Art Awards gala at Cipriani. They were honored there last week too.

TAKE TWO: Kate and Laura Mulleavy had reason to have déjà vu at Monday night’s Americans for the Arts National Art Awards gala at Cipriani 42nd Street. They were just honored there — though the decor was considerably changed — Thursday night at the National Design Awards. The space’s floral-themed interior was not lost on the designers. “It’s all so different. In some ways, it’s the same thing as doing a show,” Kate Mulleavy said. “We know this probably is a special time and we won’t be having a week like this again, so we’re just enjoying it.”

Another designer, Tina Lutz, turned up with her husband, Justin Morris, who filmed introductory videos for Angela Lansbury, Herb Alpert and the rest of the honorees. Alec Baldwin ducked in to read a letter from Congress congratulating the organization for its 50th anniversary. Kim Gordon, Jeff Koons, Eli Broad and Caroline Baumann were among the many art lovers in the crowd. Plenty of ink has been spilled recently about Koons’ racy “Made in Heaven” photographs that are now on display at the Upper East Side gallery Luxembourg & Dayan. The images of the artist and his former wife, Ilona Staller, the Italian porn star and politician, having sex has revived the is-it-art debate.

Koons said he hasn’t seen the exhibition and had “nothing to do with the installation.” Asked if he has been following all the media critiques, the artist said, “Not so closely — I’m continuing to do my work called ‘Antiquities.’ I feel more engaged than ever.”
