FITNESS APP: Equinox Fitness has embraced its inner nerd.

 

The upscale gym has revamped its digital platform to include new mobile and tablet applications, as well as a redesigned Web site. The tech overhaul launches Monday, and it’s meant to provide fitness enthusiasts, who are members of the gym, yet another outlet to track their progress. It also gives them the opportunity to book spin bikes, check in to the club and search for classes, among other things. 

 

According to Equinox digital director Matt Burton, the Web site and the app, which are for IPhone and IPad, allows users to sync data from their wearble devices, such as Jawbone and Fitbit. That’s new for the New York-based health club.

 

“Many people are data rich but information poor,” Burton said. “Equinox has an opportunity to fill that void.”

 

By having the ability to track data, such as distance and calories burned, gym-goers can not only personalize their fitness journey, but also improve their workouts, he said.  

 

“Technology will drive the member experience,” Burton offered, explaining that members can also share their workouts now via social media. 

 

In addition to quantified data, users can tap into Equinox’s Q Blog for tips on how to improve their routine. The app will also provide suggestions on classes based on your mood. For such advice, members must click the “Make Me” icon in the app, and use a pull down menu to find workouts that reflect their goals. For example, members will find cardio-centric classes under “Make me Sweat Like It’s Raining.”

 

The updated interface is the first phase of the souped-up digital experience, the company said. 

 

“Technology is really starting to lay a foundation for us with our members,” Burton concluded. “We are more than a fitness brand, we consider ourselves as a lifestyle brand.”
