DOWNTOWN GIRL: Norma Kamali, who has been a fixture at 11 West 56th Street in New York for the past 30 years, may be ready to make a move.
The designer said she’s actively looking at two new spaces and, if all goes well, she will sell her uptown headquarters. Kamali’s 10,000-square-foot location, which spans five floors, houses her retail store, wellness café, design studio and business. She employs 35 people.
“We’ve grown out of this space. It’s been fantastic for me, but I’m ready to make a change,” said Kamali. “I feel like I’ve been in a marriage five years too long.” She said the new location would probably be downtown. Earlier in her career, Kamali had a store on Spring Street in SoHo.
Kamali has been busy with her Kamali Kulture collection, whose pieces sell for under $100 on sites such as Zappos.com, Amazon.com and her own site, kamalikulture.com. The collection includes swimwear, outerwear, accessories, tops, bottoms and dresses.
