PROPOSING A POWWOW: Donatella Versace set off a firestorm in the Italian papers on Friday after revealing her intention to invite Giorgio Armani, Miuccia Prada, Frida Giannini, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to have lunch with her before Milan Fashion Week and to discuss ways to make the city’s more relevant and international. The designer said London and New York are “doing a lot for fashion,” according to Il Sole 24 Ore. The Italian fashion system, on the other hand, is “entrenched. When I look at myself in the mirror in the morning, I wonder if what I do is updated, I keep myself informed, I try to understand the changes of habits and language, from social network to music.” Versace did not directly attack Mario Boselli, head of the Italian Chamber of Fashion, but urged a more streamlined structure for the association, which she sees as a firm and, as such, in need of a chief executive officer. It is understood Boselli has been working on this with members of the Chamber, including Prada chief Patrizio Bertelli and Diesel’s Renzo Rosso, who attended a Chamber meeting a week earlier. The new structure would be similar to Pitti Immagine’s, which counts Raffaello Napoleone as its ceo. Napoleone has been rumored to be favored as a successor to Boselli, whose mandate ends in the spring. Those asked to lunch by Versace either did not comment or were not reachable for comment at press time.
