DISHING ON THE MODELS: “Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women,” by Michael Gross, is having another moment in the spotlight. The book, which exposes “the untold truths of an ugly trade,” will be re-released next month with a new afterword called “The Last Word.” Gross, who has updated the book twice previously, has added 12 pages on the diminution of the modeling business. “The chapter opens with the March 2011 fashion magazines and the realization that not one of the covers is a model. It talks about all the business changes,” said Gross, citing the lawsuits, the changes at the big modeling agencies and a capsule look at the last 10 years of the modeling business.
“Model” was originally published in 1995, and has sold over 500,000 copies around the world, including eight foreign editions. The book explores the lives of models and digs up dirt on the vast sums of money, sex, drugs, and back-stabbing that comes with the business.
The Lambs Club and IT Books, an imprint of Harper Collins Publishers, along with a bevy of models, will mark the book’s rerelease with a party Tuesday night at The Bar at The Lambs Club. Among the models expected to attend are Pat Cleveland, Carmen Dell’Orefice, Dianne DeWitt, Debbie Dickinson and Patti Hansen. But don’t look for Shalom Harlow at the party. The book’s jacket carries the quote: “I would not invite Michael Gross to a party with me.”
But Gross said he’s going to put Harlow’s name on the guest list at the door. “Maybe you can let her know she can come to a party with me,” he said.
