BLAENK CHECK: The Start Your Fashion Business award ceremony was held inside a church in Mitte and it was young designers Silke Gelb and Nadine Möllenkamp who had their prayers answered when their label Blaenk won the 25,000-euro first prize. “It is so great to be supported by the city of Berlin, even though we have only been going for three seasons,” Möllenkamp said of the win, which, sponsored in part by the Berlin senate, includes support and funding for a future runway show.
The duo met when they were both working in Paris for Viktor & Rolf and returned to their native Germany to set up their label. The winning collection was praised for its romantic elements of scarlet chiffon and considered detailing. “We actually integrated the old into the new by upcycling antique garments, which fits in with our ethos of sustainable fashion”, Gelbe explained.
