DEJOHN’S NIGHT: As part of the seventh annual Philadelphia Fashion week, home-grown designer Emil DeJohn was honored with the Charlie Scott Award for Excellence Thursday night at a black-tie affair in historic Headhouse Square.
DeJohn commuted to New York for 40 years and had his own label, Alex DeJohn by Emil, which was sold at Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. He dressed Barbra Streisand, Julie and Trisha Nixon, and was frequently featured in Vogue and The New York Times. Fifteen years ago, he began teaching fashion design at Moore College of Art and Design, Drexel University and The Art Institute of Philadelphia, where he is currently.
“I decided it was time to give back,” he said. “I knew I would not have the luxury of travel but that I would become a mentor.”
And mentor he has. DeJohn’s students have gone on to work for the likes of Oscar de la Renta, Coach, Alice + Olivia, Neiman Marcus, and Diane von Furstenberg.
