David Bailey Buzz Builds in London

Ahead of next week’s opening of a National Portrait Gallery exhibition of his work, the photographer is launching a collection of T-shirts for Selfridges.

BAILEY BUZZ: Ahead of next week’s London opening of a National Portrait Gallery exhibition of his work, photographer David Bailey has teamed up with East London label The Bleach Room to launch a capsule collection of T-shirts for Selfridges in London. The British lensman has created a series of six designs based on his portraits of Michael Caine, Johnny Depp, Boy George, Mick Jagger, Grace Jones and John Lennon. “It’s not fashion, it’s just a T-shirt,” said a characteristically deadpan Bailey of his launch. “Not everyone can afford a print [so] it’s a nice way of making [my work available] for everyone…I think it’s quite nice that everyone can have a T-shirt that has an image with some history behind it.” The line launched Thursday and is exclusive to Selfridges, and the T-shirts are priced at £70, or around $115.

Also to coincide with the exhibition’s launch, British GQ has devoted the cover of its March 2014 issue to Bailey’s images. The edition has a choice of six covers that each feature Bailey’s famed portraits of Michael Caine, Johnny Depp, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, John Lennon and Jack Nicholson. Inside the issue, celebrities including Yoko Ono, Martin Scorsese and Tom Cruise have written tributes about each cover star, while Bailey gives insights into shooting each of the subjects. British GQ’s March edition hits news stands Feb. 6, while the National Portrait Gallery exhibition, ‘Bailey’s Stardust,’ opens on the same date and runs through to June 1.
