COMEBACK KID: “I guess I didn’t really realize how much I’d missed showing,” said Tom Ford, who staged his first full runway outing on Monday night in London, nearly a decade after leaving Gucci Group. “It’s hard to admit, after telling everyone I didn’t want to do a show!” Celebrity guests included Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, who called the collection “phenomenal. The beading was beautiful and the gowns were amazing!”

Before the show, Ford said he was “totally nervous. So nervous. It was a huge amount of stress. When I was doing Gucci and YSL I had a string of hits behind me. So if I had an off season, it was an off season. This was my first show since 2004, other than the one in New York, and that was a different kind of show.” Then there was the small, private runway show he staged for spring 2012 at his London showroom, which elicited some nasty reviews. “Spring was a bad show. Oh my God it was horrible. Well, first of all, it wasn’t meant to be a show. It was a showroom collection that ended up being a show, and it was terrible. But there were some great pieces, and it sold really well,” he said.

He said Monday night’s collection was aimed at his international clientele. “She lives in Moscow, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong and L.A. — and a lot of the time she lives in two of those cities at least. She is urban. She clearly does have enough money to spend,” he said. Although he declined to give any revenue figures for the company he said: “Let’s just say sales are great. We’re happy.”

And he certainly has a big fan in Timberlake. “I’m putting an album out next month — but apart from that I’ve just been following Tom around going to all his shows,” grinned the dapper singer before the show.
