Collective Aims to Create a Fashion Soundtrack

The Sound of the Season’s second edition launches exclusively at Colette on March 2.

FASHION BEATS: Summing up "a musical reflection of the spirit of a season in fashion" with her The Sound of the Season project is the aim of digital image consultant Sarah Jonathan, founder of the fashion sound design agency Jaws Studio.

Now in its second edition, her spring 2013 compilation CD aims to comprise the musical mood of the collections shown last September and October. It includes tracks played on the catwalks of Saint Laurent in Paris and Bottega Veneta in Milan mixed by Jonathan and her friend Virginie Muys, one of the founders of the Pièce d'Anarchive brand.

"We listened to all the music played at the shows in Paris, London, New York and Milan," Jonathan explained. "Then we choose the ones we like best; the brand has no influence, it can be small brands or the biggest houses."

For the compilation’s second edition, Jonathan said many designers’ picks were surprisingly coherent, with a definite Eighties, New Wave vibe. "Things like Soft Cell, Yello and Depeche Mode, but also more recent tunes that move around that inspiration," she said. The chosen tunes are interspersed with sound that echoes the mood at the catwalk, like the noise in the room before and after a show.

The CD will be sold exclusively at Colette in Paris starting March 2, while online downloads are to be available beginning in April. To celebrate on the evening of its launch, Colette and The Sound of the Season will co-host a party at Paris’ legendary Palais Garnier opera house, which just began transforming its restaurant into a nightclub during weekends.
