Chantal Thomass Designs Range for French Open

The French lingerie maven created an 11-piece range for the tennis competition.

FOREHAND: French lingerie designer Chantal Thomass has served up a capsule collection of sportswear for fans attending the next French Open.

Thomass applied a humorous touch to the 11-piece range, which includes pussy-bow polo shirts, pleated skirts and a fishnet visor, with prices ranging from 45 euros, or $61 at current exchange, for a top to 120 euros, or $162, for a tunic.

“I stopped doing ready-to-wear about 20 years ago. I have missed doing it!” Thomass said, noting tennis in the Twenties, and French champ Suzanne Lenglen, inspired the collection. “I don’t practice any sport,” she confessed, adding with a laugh: “That is so French!”

The tournament known in France as Roland Garros, which runs from May 25 to June 8, usually draws about 450,000 visitors, including a battalion of celebrities.

“We wanted to give a feminine touch to our brand [Roland Garros],” explained Jérémy Botton, deputy chief executive of the Fédération Française de Tennis (the French Tennis Federation).

The collection will be available at the Roland Garros stadium starting May 24 until the end of the tournament. Depending on the feedback it gets, Botton said it could roll out to fashion retailers.
