Pierre Cardin Endowed a Chair at Barcelona University

Next on the iconic designer's multifaceted drawing board is the construction of the Palace of Lights in Venice, slated to be Italy’s tallest building.

CARDIN’S CHAIR: In Barcelona last weekend to close out the ninth edition of the 080 fashion event, Pierre Cardin endowed a chair at Barcelona University’s School of Cinema & Audiovisuals. Its purpose is to connect students with what director Josep Maixenchs called “relevant cultural personalities.” For his part, the iconic designer — who turns 90 in July — added, “Some people lose money gambling; I lose it with cultural espectáculos.”

Next on his multifaceted drawing board is the construction of the Palace of Lights in Venice, slated to be Italy’s tallest building with 50 floors, a 300-room hotel, commercial center and port. “It will be a habitable sculpture,” Cardin promised.

On Saturday, he showed a past-present grouping of 200 models including dresses with wired or rubberized hems and signature circle motifs, vaporous party clothes and plastic rainwear.

Held in the Salón del Tinell in Barcelona’s medieval Gothic quarter, 080, which is underwritten by the regional government here, featured 25 runway shows by emerging local designers and such major Barcelona-based brands as Mango and Desigual, a first-time participant.
