NATURAL EVOLUTION: Bulgari is boosting its accessories division with a little help from Isabella Rossellini, who presented the handbag she has designed for the Roman house at a party Wednesday night during Paris couture week.
The rectangular tote comes in four materials, including pony skin and carved patent leather, each featuring a different Art Deco-inspired enamel clasp with a twist lock made from semi-precious stones such as amethyst or tiger eye. “I wanted to combine simplicity, practicality, from my Swedish side, with the warmth and the elegance of Italy – and humor, that’s my personal touch,” said Rossellini, referring to the snail print on the inner lining. “We chose the snail, just because my bag is a little bit like my home.”
Bulgari chief executive Francesco Trapani declined to discuss sales projections for the bag, but said the accessories division has been growing “strong double-digits” since the start of the year and could be expected to double its share of total turnover within three or four years, from 7-8 percent at present. “If it’s true that we are still small in this industry, clearly the growth rates are very encouraging,” he said, noting handbags would get a further boost from the upcoming launch of a capsule collection designed by Matthew Williamson. The ad campaign was shot by Fabrizio Ferri, who recalled that he had photographed a young Rossellini on her first-ever modeling assignment – coincidentally, wearing a Bulgari necklace.
The actress said she has wrapped the next 10 installments of her award-winning series “Green Porno,” about the sex lives of insects, and is preparing to direct and star in “Manhattan Beasts,” a surrealist nature documentary with cameos by Andre Leon Talley and chef Mario Batali. “It’s a day in my life in Manhattan, only that my concentration keeps on going to animals, whether it’s cockroaches, rats, pigeons,” she explained. “I’ll play Darwin with a beard.”
