BROOKE’S SHIELD: It would appear, from two angles at least, that Kiefer Sutherland may indeed have been acting to aid Brooke Shields before he brawled with Proenza Schouler designer Jack McCollough last week. In a statement released late Monday, lawyers for the actress confirmed that McCollough bumped into Shields at a party and the incident drew the concern of Sutherland. The actor allegedly head-butted McCollough in the ensuing fracas, breaking the designer’s nose. “Kiefer has always been a gentleman in her company,” said Shields’ attorney, Gerald Lefcourt. “Both Jack and Kiefer are friends of Ms. Shields, and she regrets this unfortunate situation.” Early rumors had Sutherland coming to the defense of Shields before the fight, but the actress had been silent until now. New York police charged Sutherland with misdemeanor assault and issued the actor a summons after he turned himself in May 7. A representative for McCollough reaffirmed his statement last week that, “All we can say at this point is that he was the victim of a vicious, violent, unprovoked assault and that the matter is in the hands of the authorities.” Sutherland’s lawyers Monday released a statement through the same public relations firm as the one used by Shields meant to combat what they called “untruthful and self-serving information.” In the statement, Michael Williams, the actor’s lawyer, said he was confident “the investigation being conducted by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the NYPD will confirm that Kiefer Sutherland was neither the instigator nor a wrongdoer in this incident.” The fight took place early May 5 in TriBeCa’s Mercer Hotel at an after party for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala.
