“It’s the most flattering light in the world — you look 12 years old — barely 12,” Stephen Jones told the female party guest who stepped under his glowing, halolike art installation and admired her youthful, new looks in the mirror on Wednesday night during a gala evening in London.
Jones created the work, “Celestial Bonnet,” with the Welsh artist Cerith Wyn Evans as part of Britain Creates 2012: Fashion + Art Collusion, a British Fashion Council project that paired designers with artists to create works to be sold at a charity auction.
The halo was clearly a hit with everyone: It sold for 16,500 pounds, or $25,740, and was the top-selling lot at the live auction on Wednesday evening at the Old Selfridges Hotel. A digital video animation by Mary Katrantzou and Mark Titchner, “Tint the pallid landscape (Off to the wars in lace)” went for 7,000 pounds, or $10,920.

Guests at the black-tie cocktail, dinner and auction included HRH Princess Beatrice of York, David Bailey, Florence Welch, Tallulah Harlech, Valeria Napoleone, Christopher Bailey, Matthew Williamson, Sandra Choi, Simon Holloway, Giles Deacon, Graeme Fidler, Michael Herz and Anya Hindmarch.
“I’ve been embroidering these on since 1967,” deadpanned Williamson, pointing to the short straws that made up part of the artwork that he created with Mat Collishaw. The work, “Lepiszoulo,” shows a decaying butterfly, with 3-D embellishments stitched on top.
Deacon, meanwhile, collaborated with the Turner Prize winning artist Jeremy Deller on an untitled installation featuring a printed Lycra bodysuit, cape and headdress with black feather.
“I’d like to say that my collaborator was Picasso — wouldn’t that have been amazing?” said Deacon. “But it was just Jeremy — I’ve known him for years. We were actually in a band together when we were younger, the Teenage Cruisers.”
