LIGHTS OUT: Lights will go out across Britain on Monday night, and a host of memorial services and art exhibitions are planned across the country to mark the anniversary of the start of World War I in Britain.

On Monday morning, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a ceremony in Liège, Belgium, and were later headed to the St. Symphorien Military Cemetery near Mons, Belgium, for another service. The Duchess of Cambridge wore a cream Alexander McQueen coat with a Peter Pan collar and a Jane Taylor hat. Queen Elizabeth and other members of the royal family were set to take part in memorials in Scotland and Norfolk, England.

As part of the day of remembrance, Marks & Spencer is supporting the Lights Out campaign, which asks Britons to turn off their lights between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm on Monday, and leave one light or candle burning.

In 1914, Sir Edward Grey, Britain’s foreign secretary at the time, said: “The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” The retailer has been selling centenary candles to raise funds for the armed forces, veterans and their families, and lights will be turned off at M&S branches in Britain.

Artists including Jeremy Deller, Nalini Malani, Bob and Roberta Smith and Bedwyr Williams have all created new works to mark the 100th anniversary.
