BRINGING UP MAISIE: Alexander Skarsgård scooped up his tiny costar, the 7-year-old actress Onata Aprile, which only served to magnify his 6-foot, 4-inch frame, draped in a black Calvin Klein suit. The pair — setting off a frenzy of coos and aahs – then posed for photos at the Cinema Society, Tod’s & GQ-hosted screening of “What Maisie Knew” at the Landmark Sunshine Theater in New York on Thursday night. “It’s really fun to climb on him,” Aprile said, with her mother, Valentine, doting over her shoulder. Joanna Vanderham, Zosia Mamet, Erin Heatherton, Natalie Dormer of “Game of Thrones,” Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Russell Simmons mingled over popcorn before taking their seats.

Directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the film’s screenplay was adapted from the 1897 Henry James novella about the young daughter of a husband and wife undergoing a bitter divorce. Skarsgård plays the love interest of Julianne Moore, an aspiring and self-involved singer fresh off a divorce from her work-obsessed, art dealer husband.

“I just wanted to play a rock star,” Moore laughed. “It was really a challenge for me. It’s obviously not something I was used to.” She said she aimed to emulate Patti Smith, Courtney Love (“I watched a lot of Hole videos”) and Alison Mosshart, who provided original songs from her band, The Kills, for the movie.

“[Julianne] came to some gigs,” said Mosshart. “It was unnerving, actually.”

Skarsgård, who takes on a fatherly role to young Maisie in the film, said he is well-versed in dealing with children, despite having none of his own.

“I got 300 younger siblings,” he said. “I come from a very big family. I’m the oldest — we didn’t fight much. I would grab [my younger brother Gus] by his ears and lift him.”
