BIG HEART: That Donna Karan is passionate about Haiti is no secret. On Thursday night, she celebrated “Fashion for Haiti: One Million Hearts,” a collaboration between Urban Zen, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and eBay. Almost 150 CFDA members, including Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Nicole Miller, personalized papier mâché hearts from Haiti locals, which were on display and will be auctioned on eBay from April 22 to May 2.
“I was blown away by the creativity,” Karan said. “Each one is so unique. The only way I can call it is a couture collection.”
The designer herself made three hearts: for Donna Karan, DKNY and Urban Zen.
“For a number of years, we worked with the CFDA,” noted eBay senior vice president of global communications Alan Marks. “I met Donna two years ago through the Clinton Global Initiative. This is a natural extension of ‘You Can’t Fake Fashion.’”
Sales of the hearts will benefit Urban Zen Foundation’s efforts with Haitian artisans, and many pieces from them were also on show at the Stephan Weiss Studio that night. Hugh Jackman, Kenneth Cole, Vera Wang, Rachel Roy, Olivier Theyskens, Zac Posen, Maria Cornejo and Charlotte Ronson were among the guests.
“It’s my dream,” said Karan, scanning the room. “The next thing is to take everybody down there.”
