ACCORDING TO BORIS: “The London suit is a pandemic — it’s populated the entire planet,” said London Mayor Boris Johnson at the launch of The London Heritage Map, a bit of marketing material from the British Fashion Council that details the iconic styles that Britain gave the world. The map lists the three-piece suit, the bowler hat, the bondage trouser and the classic brogue, a pair of which the mayor himself was wearing, made by Church’s. “You don’t get Scotch whisky made in Korea or Parmesan cheese made in Australia — you come to London for a suit,” he continued, warming to his theme. Johnson said he was also fascinated that “men are apparently spending more money on clothes than women....It’s obviously a growing and booming business and I’m proud to say that London is at the very heart of it.”

Earlier in the year, during the last round of men’s wear shows, Prime Minister David Cameron revealed that he wore Marks & Spencer Y-fronts. Johnson, however, was less forthcoming. Asked what his preference was, he replied: “Neither.”
