BELAFONTE’S CAUSE: Montblanc is shining a light on the social works of Harry Belafonte. The luxury brand has partnered with Thornwillow Press to create a special-edition libretto written by Belafonte. Entitled “1963,” the libretto covers Belafonte’s experience during the Civil Rights Movement, as well as his relationship with Martin Luther King Jr. and the March on Washington, which took place 50 years ago.
Under the patronage of Montblanc, the special-edition series will be gifted to an “exclusive group of luminaries who reflect the core values” of the luxury brand. For further clarity, Montblanc said that, without providing names, these individuals are “pioneers” in the fields of education, culture of writing, service, philanthropy and business. While the “1963” manuscript will not be for wide distribution, there will be a limited number of copies available through Thornwillow for an undetermined price.
Montblanc noted that the series includes 149 leather and 4,810 paper librettos. Although a tad odd at first blush, the numbers are “not a matter of chance,” the brand said, noting that “149 commemorates the original 149 Montblanc Meisterstuck writing instrument and 4,810 represents the height of the Mont Blanc summit, the highest in Europe.”
