BEIJING BOUND: Jeweler Cindy Chao is designing her first store to open this spring in Beijing to resemble a gallery, featuring 16 to 18 pieces of her sculptural, gem-encrusted work. “I don’t want it to be like a jewelry store,” said Chao during her first visit to Dallas. “I want it to be like an art space. The 1,200-square-foot boutique will be in the five-star Park Hyatt Beijing Hotel in the Chaoyang central business and diplomatic district, home to a majority of the biggest foreign companies invested in China and almost all embassies. Currently her work is sold only through Bergdorf Goodman, occasional auctions at Christie’s and by appointment at her showroom in Taipei.
With the encouragement of fellow Taipei native, client and Bagsnob.com blogger Tina Craig, Chao brought 70 pieces to show the uber wealthy in Dallas, including a $7.18 million, 19 carat D flawless emerald-cut diamond set in an undulating pave diamond ring and a dramatic $680,000 orchid cuff. Bestsellers were gold and diamond branch bangles at $18,000 to $25,000 and ivy hoop earrings from $35,000 to $45,000, she said.
