MANUFACTURED SCARCITY: Barneys New York has partnered with Adidas as the exclusive U.S. retailer for the re-launch of the classic Stan Smith sneaker, which has been unavailable at retail since December 2011. An updated leather version of the Stan Smith, retailing for $100, will go on sale at the Barneys Madison Avenue flagship on Sept. 4, tied to the kickoff of New York Fashion Week. The retro tennis shoe will then roll out to Dover Street Market in London and Tokyo, as well as Colette in Paris and Andreas Murkudis in Berlin, in connection to those cities’ various fashion and art weeks. A wider re-release of the shoe is planned for 2014. Despite its popularity, Adidas pulled the Stan Smith from distribution two years ago to protect its iconic status. “There was a need to heighten the perception around the shoe and to have people appreciate it in all its glory and not take its timelessness and classic simplicity for granted,” said the German company. So, stock up while you can, ungrateful sneaker heads.
