CHINA CLUB: Bao Bao Wan’s fine jewelry collection has made its European retail debut at Harrods new luxury jewelry room. The designer will sell high-end pieces as well as ones from her And The Little Ones collection.

“It’s a 24-hour collection. You can hike in the jewelry, shower in it, and even wear it on the red carpet,” said the designer, referring to Little Ones, which features tiny charms made from diamonds and colored stones in shapes of cameras, bicycles, teapots, eye glasses, or guns.

The charms measure approximately one square centimeter, and hang on fine, 18-karat gold chains. Wan, who studied photography at Sarah Lawrence college in New York, said the Little Ones creations in particular are “very pictorial, a complete photo, a complete moment in a frame.”

Her high-end jewelry pieces include vase-shaped diamond pave earrings; long, skinny “scarf” necklaces set with amethyst and multi-colored sapphires; and tourmaline beaded fringe earrings topped with sparkling pagodas.

Also on sale will be a collection of precious charms shaped like cupcakes or sweeties, called Les Bonbons. “It’s all fat free. I like to create jewelry that makes you smile and laugh,” said the Beijing native, who also serves as the face of Dior in China.

Prices for the fine jewelry collection start at 4,000 pounds, or $6,590, while those for the And The Little Ones collection begin at 700 pounds, or $1,153 at current exchange.

Her jewelry line is stocked at Lane Crawford, and Wan noted she was the first high-end, Mainland Chinese brand to break into both Lane Crawford and Harrods. “I’m always the first person to eat the crab!” she said, referring to a Chinese expression that describes someone who takes the initiative.

Harrods has recently capped a major, two-year project to overhaul its accessories halls with the opening of two new jewelry spaces: A fine jewelry room and a luxury jewelry room, both of which are on the ground floor.

The latter stocks smaller, independent designers and brands including Georg Jensen, Stephen Webster, Annoushka, Monica Vinader, in addition to Bao Bao Wan. For the next month, Harrods plans to dedicate two of its windows to the Bao Bao Wan collection.
