Rudi Gernreich Label to Relaunch

According to sources, the principals behind the project have secured worldwide trademark rights and are hoping to present a collection on the runway in 2014.

BACK TO THE FUTURE?: The brand revivals just keep coming. More than 25 years after his death, American designer Rudi Gernreich — whose topless swimsuit, unisex jumpsuits and head-to-toe prints made waves in the Sixties — is destined for a relaunch, WWD has learned.

According to sources, the principals behind the project have secured worldwide trademark rights and are hoping to present a collection on the runway in 2014. The identity of the financial backer, described as a German entrepreneur, could not be learned. It is understood the new venture will be based in New York and operate under the trademark name Gernreich. A recruitment drive has been initiated to secure design talents, the sources said.

Fashion maverick Rei Kawakubo shone the spotlight on Gernreich in 2003 with a capsule line of reissued styles under the Peggy Moffitt/Comme des Garçons label. Moffitt, the keeper of Gernreich’s legacy, was the late designer’s muse, her wide-eyed stare and blunt Vidal Sassoon bowl cut immortalized in countless images by her late photographer husband, William Claxton. Gernreich’s designs are on display through Oct. 7 in “The Total Look,” an exhibition at the Savannah College of Art and Design Museum of Art in Savannah, Ga., following its debut at the Museum of Contemporary Art at The Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles earlier this year.
