AWARDS TIME: Gucci has unveiled the nominees for the Gucci Award for Women in Cinema, an award for outstanding artistic achievement the fashion house presents annually in collaboration with the Venice International Film Festival.
This year’s nominees are Colleen Atwood, costume designer for “Snow White and the Huntsman”; Nadine Labaki, director of “Where Do We Go Now?”; Brit Marling, actress in “Another Earth”; Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, director of “Saving Face,” and Thelma Schoonmaker, editor of “Hugo.”
The jury, led by Gucci creative director Frida Giannini, also includes actress Zoë Saldana, director and screenwriter Paolo Sorrentino, dean Mary Schmidt Campbell of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and film journalist and curator Giulia D’Agnolo Vallan. They will reveal the winner on Aug. 31 in Venice.
Gucci also partnered with Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation to restore Francesco Rosi’s 1972 political thriller “Il caso Mattei,” which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival when it was originally released. The restored film will premiere Aug. 31, and Rosi will receive a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice festival this year.
“This year is particularly meaningful as we recognize not only contemporary pioneers in filmmaking but also the career of Rosi and his impact on socially committed Italian cinema,” said Giannini.
