Augustin Teboul Win Dorchester Prize

The design duo of Annelie Augustin and Odély Teboul beat out four other finalists at the event in Paris.

PRIZE COLLECTION: Annelie Augustin and Odély Teboul of Paris-based label Augustin Teboul beat out four other finalists to win the annual Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize, held this year at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris.

The duo literally jumped for joy Tuesday night as they clutched their Baccarat-designed award in front of a jury made up of designers Kenzo Takada, Nathalie Rykiel, Chantal Thomass, Bruno Frisoni, Lorenz Baumer and Harumi Klossowska de Rola; consultant Jean-Jacques Picart, and journalists Elizabeth Saltzman and Alexandra Golovanoff.

Their all-black collection featured evening gowns made from tufted tulle or lace mousseline, with insets made from crochet or cobweb-like beaded net panels.

“We are very moved,” said Teboul, saying the duo hoped to use part of their prize money of 30,000 euros, or around $39,000 at current exchange, to beef up their studio staff. “At the moment, Annelie and I do everything ourselves.” Augustin and Teboul also won a stay at a Dorchester Collection hotel in Paris or Milan during the next fashion week in spring 2013.

The other competitors in the contest for up-and-coming designers, now in its third edition, were Calla, IRM Design, Les Garçons Paris and Quentin Veron. Each contestant showed five designs on live models on a catwalk set up in the oblong bar of the hotel.

Rykiel said the jury had singled out two clear contenders for the top prize, and she found it tough to make the final choice. “I’m a little sad for the one who didn’t get it,” she said. “Being a judge is always an ungrateful task. You know what they say, ‘To choose is to forsake.’”

The prize, which launched at The Dorchester in London in 2010, is hosted by different properties belonging to the group each year. The previous winners were Thomas Tait and Anndra Neen. The 2012 edition was open to designers in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland who have operated their brand for at least two years.
