ARMANI’S FILM SCHOOL: Giorgio Armani is getting into the film business. Taking a love for film beyond dressing a Best Actress Oscar nominee, the house will sponsor the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, taking place from Sept. 4 to 14. This year, the annual festival will screen more than 300 films from over 60 countries. Among them, Giorgio Armani’s own “Films of City Frames,” a project created in collaboration with Luxottica and Rai Cinema. The initiative includes work from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, London’s National Film and Television School, Rome’s Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Paris’ Groupe Esra and the Hong Kong Academy of the Performing Arts.
Students were asked to create short films using Giorgio Armani’s Frames of Life glasses as a “perceptual filter.” The shorts were then compiled into a collage of each of the metropolitan areas to create the final product. “It is exciting to place this aspiring filmmakers’ project alongside the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, which has long been a launching pad for so many important global films,” Armani said. “TIFF and Toronto are both world class. Bringing young formative cinema talent to Toronto is in perfect focus for me.” Roberta Armani and Academy Award-winning producer and director Edward Zwick will host the world premiere of “Films of City Frames,” to be held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 6 at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. A cocktail party at the CN Tower, also hosted by Armani and Zwick, will follow the screening, with Mark Ronson serving as DJ.
