ALL IN THE HANDS: Craftsmen are held in high regard these days as traditional handcrafted products continue to gain fans. So The Balvenie, a handcrafted single malt Scotch whiskey, has asked men’s designer Todd Snyder to curate the Rare Craft Collection, a compilation of some of the best examples of American craftsmanship. Among those who will be featured are Graham Thompson of Optimo Hats in Chicago, which creates fedoras, porkpies and homburgs, among other styles; Schirley Zisman of Golden Bear Sportswear in San Francisco, who has designed authentic leather and wool outerwear since the Fifties; RH Lee of Offerman Woodshop in Los Angeles, who creates handmade furniture, boats and cabinetry, and Rick Kelly of Kelly Guitars in Greenwich Village, N.Y., who creates guitars from reclaimed lumber.
“I’ve always been a strong supporter of American craftspeople, and this is a great opportunity to highlight some of them to a wider audience with a brand I personally respect and admire,” said Snyder.
Andrew Weir, U.S. senior brand manager for The Balvenie, said Snyder “has shown a discerning eye and appreciation for well-crafted goods through his work on his own men’s wear line....And he’s helped us create a remarkable collection that honors some of the best in American craftsmanship today.”
The selected artisans will be showcased at a series of gallery-style events around the country starting with Pebble Beach, Calif., from Aug. 13 to 17 and then hitting Dallas, New York, Chicago and Washington, before wrapping up in Philadelphia on Nov. 19 and 20.
