A ROYAL ENGAGEMENT: “Royal Style: Qing Dynasty and Western Court Jewelry” at the National Palace Museum in Taipei is Cartier’s first exhibition in Taiwan. The three-month showcase includes pieces from the museum’s permanent collection, which was salvaged after the Chinese Civil War, as well as loans from the Cartier Collection and the Shenyang Palace Museum in China. Among the 475 rare personal adornments on display are items that were worn by Emperor Puyi and his wife, Empress Wanrong, as well as numerous Asian-inspired Art Deco jewelry and timepieces created by Cartier. Although the Last Emperor was not among Cartier’s many royal and aristocratic patrons, the show highlights how the styles of the East and West have influenced one another. The exhibition opened on Saturday and will be on view in the museum’s Library Building through Sept. 9.
