A BREED APART: In a case of art imitating life — almost — Harvey Nichols has found itself the subject of a 1 million pounds, or $1.49 million, lawsuit from a dog owner who claims that she and her pup were manhandled by the London store’s security guards in 2010. Marianne Yvette Perkins said she entered the store with her Maltese puppy Lilly in a special carrier bag, but was quickly turned away because Harvey Nichols doesn’t allow dogs. Perkins claims that, after she left, security staff pursued, assaulted, and detained her outside the store. Harvey Nichols said Monday: “As this matter is subject to on-going court proceedings, we are unable to comment further at this stage.”
The irony is that earlier this month Harvey Nichols released its latest ad campaign called “The New Breed,” featuring images of women wearing spring fashion and accessories — and carrying dogs far larger than Lilly in their leather totes. Shot by Miles Aldridge, the campaign stars a variety of English breeds including a bulldog named Spud; a bull terrier called Dozer; and a Staffordshire bull terrier called Pepper. The spring campaign is meant to highlight the store’s more accessibly-priced fashion and accessories such as Kenzo Paris, Michael Michael Kors, and alice + olivia.
