SURREALISM: “We’re exploring the feminine side of the brand,” Belstaff creative director Martin Cooper said backstage after the brand’s first-ever runway presentation Monday, which showed flowy, pleated skirts and dresses with movement and vertical stripes. “This is another surreal moment in what’s been a surreal year,” said Harry Slatkin, Belstaff’s chief executive. The opening of Belstaff’s first U.S. store on Madison Avenue on Monday, an expensive play on an English country house, had some “light bulb moments” but Slatkin chalked it up to another “surreal moment.” “He’s like a dog with a bone,” said Tommy Hilfiger, one of Belstaff’s owners, who explained that all the vertical stripes in the collection were inspired by Belstaff’s vintage luggage from years back.
