10000 Balloons Kabul

UP, UP AND AWAY: Fashion’s fondness for crowdfunding keeps gaining steam with designers like Nashville-based Manuel Cuevas making public appeals. Next month crowdsourcing will make 10,000 Balloons, an international art project, a reality in Kabul. Next month one Saturday morning (the start of the work week in Afghanistan) the artist Yazmany Arboleda and 130 volunteers will surprise locals on their way to work with 10,000 pink balloons.

Zarif Design’s Zolykha Sherzad is creating the uniforms for each of the Afghani artists, musicians and designers who comprise the volunteers. The team — half women, half women — will spend six hours handing out 10,000 biodegradable balloons each of which will include a message written by the individual who donated $1 for that particular balloon.  Organized with the Afghan Women’s Network and the United Nations, the public art project has won over Francesco Rulli, founder of Film Annex and co-founder of Mrs. Mudd with John Malkovich, who has bought 1,000 balloons.

“Every balloon that will be seen in Kabul will be the physical manifestation of an individual’s belief in art and culture as a way of moving forward — and not war,” said Arboleda, who will take his public art show to Brussels and his hometown of Medellin, Colombia next year and then to New York City in 2015.
