Down to the wire, while their husbands remain miles apart, Ann Romney and First Lady Michelle Obama seemed to be on something of a wavelength, of the sartorial sort. Both rallying for their husbands in Ohio — Romney on Thursday and Obama on Saturday — each opted for austere black pants with flashy, effervescent styling on top.

Ann Romney: Punchy blazer, polka dots, a glittery broach, an equally glittery cuff and hoop earrings — it looks as if Ms. Romney hit a J. Crew store mid-clearance sale and then plunged into her jewelry box, blindfolded.

Michelle Obama: The First Lady jettisoned the prim dresses that have become her signature for a pair of no-nonsense trousers. Still, Obama managed to work in the pretty factor, courtesy of her floral blouse.
