NEW YORK -- Police believe they have nabbed the so-called Gentleman Bandit, the man suspected in a string of Upper East Side jewelry robberies and a holdup at Vera Wang's Madison Avenue boutique that ended in the shooting of two customers.
Acting on a telephone tip, police arrested Randy Caggiano, 38, Friday in a Queens billiard hall. Caggiano has been charged with at least six robberies on the Upper East Side and with attempted murder in connection with the Wang boutique stickup, according to Detective Kim Royster, a police spokeswoman.
The Maryland couple, who were shot while shopping for their daughter's wedding dress last March, were among the victims who identified Caggiano, Royster said. Caggiano, who has a tatoo that says "Born to Corrupt, Kill and Rob," served seven years of a five-to-15 year sentence for the death of his brother. Police recovered a silver 9mm automatic pistol from the suspect's home, according to Royster.
Also arrested was Robert Segal, 39. Segal has been charged with two of the robberies, but Royster said he has not been identified in the Wang holdup.
