Manhattan met Malibu over the July 4th weekend in the Hamptons, where water, wine, stars and slipdresses triggered a few fireworks under the tents.
First stop was the annual Taste of the Summer event to benefit Guild Hall on Saturday, where Hamptons toney types gorged on sushi, salad and salmon from local restaurants under a big top at Dune Alpin Farms in Bridgehampton.
On Sunday, whatever West Coasters weren't at Ted Field's wingding in East Hampton, were at the kickoff party for the second annual Hamptons International Film Festival at Sag Pond Vineyards in Sagaponick. Chevy Chase, who says he's been summering in the Hamptons "for 40 years," played auctioneer to raise money for this October's festival. Director Whit Stillman, who directed the blue blooded cult film "Metropolitan," was around, arranging for his second film, "Barcelona," to be screened for another filmfest fund-raiser in late July. Armand Assante, Roy Scheider, Frederic Fekkai, Carl Icahn and David Letterman's producer Robert Morton partook of the local wines, but Griffin Dunne rode up on his bicycle in a T-shirt and shorts, felt underdressed and sped off down a dirt road.
On the Fourth, Claudia Cohen welcomed Calvin and Kelly Klein, Donna Karan, Fran Lebowitz, Ian and Rita Schrager, banker Jeffrey Leeds, dancer Melinda Roy, Julio and Vera Santa Domingo and 30 or so others for hot dogs and fireworks. When a particularly good-looking GII jet flew by at close range, everyone said it was Peter Morton saying bye bye on his way to London.
But the big rumor wasn't from Malibu or Manhattan, but from Washington, D.C.: Word still has it that the Clintons might spend their August vacation in the Hamptons, at the home of Mort Zuckerman. But on Tuesday the White House denied it and said the First Couple is considering a return to Martha's Vineyard.
