An enormous set of nonfunctioning organ pipes constructed in the rotunda of the Grand Palais set the mood for Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel collection on Tuesday morning.

From where his guests sat, it made for an expensive curiosity, one clarified as the models started walking. The motif: tubing, as seen in the bold stiffness of an overblown sleeve and the elongated striped torso construction of many a dress. Yet while the trick could have gone quickly awry, it didn’t, as Lagerfeld refused to let his witty editorial conceit du jour trample his self-imposed mandate to cater overtly to the stylistic whims of an ever-adoring clientele with a wealth of gotta-have-them clothes and accessories. (Hence Chanel’s terrific new pump, in black with a Lucite heel of a height that these days plays like an haute take on the sensible shoe.) For fall, Lagerfeld gave the couture plenty to swoon over, presenting as he did a spectacular collection that, coupled with the unbearable heat beneath the venue’s greenhouse-effect glass dome, had just about everyone longing for the chill air of fall. What better way to stay cozy than in glorious Chanel tweed, now oh-so-new in salt-and-pepper car coats over charming tunic-and-skirt combos? Flamboyant types can opt for feathered extras or chinchilla hem. Or they might forgo the tweeds all together in favor of a structured dress with geometric power sleeves, a motif that carried into evening in steely grays with precision jeweling and a pair of gorgeous linear, covered-up black gowns that made sensual stuff out of discretion. But, then, there is nothing discreet about Lagerfeld’s genius for elevating comfort clothes to the realm of glorious fashion. Chez Chanel, for a woman to look ultrachic isn’t enough. A frock isn’t fabulous unless it makes her feel fabulous. That’s the ultimate fashion statement, and what this collection is all about.
