Mitchell succeeds Jay Lauf, who left his position to join The Atlantic as publisher.
Mitchell returns to Wired after serving as advertising director of Wired from 1996 to 2000. He was associate publisher at The New Yorker from 2001 to 2004, reporting to then publisher David Carey.
In his new role, Mitchell will once again report to Carey, who is group president, publishing director at Cond¿ Nast overseeing The Golf titles, Portfolio and Wired Media.
Mitchell had been vice president and publisher of Details since April 2004.
