Mothers Day 2014

With Mother’s Day approaching, WWD asked designers to share their mom’s words of wisdom, greatest talents, signature dishes and more. From “be nice” to “cut your hair,” one thing’s for sure: Mom always knows best.

What my mom wants from me for Mother’s Day: for me to sleep, rest and take care of my health.
What I will give her for Mother’s Day: She lives in Nepal so we’re separated by thousands of miles, but always find time to speak daily. I like to think I honor Mother’s Day every day of the year.

Cynthia Rowley
My mom taught me: to act my age, not my shoe size…and to be a pathological optimist. She was superpsyched I sent her an article about Normcore because she’s now the hippest person in Barrington, Ill.

Gilles Mendel, J.Mendel
My mom taught me: how to appreciate the beauty of design through her insatiably curiosity for fashion, and her visionary sense of style.
My mom wished I would: wear seersucker shorts and blazers, like when I was a little boy. Were she still alive today, she would definitely approve of my penchant for Thom Browne suits!
My mom loved to wear: sable coats. My father was always so busy making furs for his clients, he rarely time to make her anything. She always complained about that.
My mom’s signature dish: Canard aux Pêches et petits pois.

My mom’s greatest talent: Her ability to laugh and be funny.
What my mom wants from me for Mother’s Day: For me to visit her more.
What I will give her for Mother’s Day: She doesn’t like gifts; her biggest request is more time spent together so we’re having a nice dinner with the family.

Nanette Lepore
My mom taught me: to laugh a lot and enjoy life. [She passed away in 2010.]
My mom’s signature dish: was pasta with fresh tomatoes and basil from her garden.
My mom’s greatest talent: was her beautiful soprano voice.
What my mom would want from me for Mother’s Day: She always loved a pretty bouquet. If she was still with us, I’d take her to Venice.
