MILAN — A bag recovered on the island of Curaçao, in the Caribbean Sea, may help focus the search for the small plane carrying Vittorio Missoni and five other individuals that went missing on Jan. 4.
According to the Italian paper Corriere della Sera, the bag, belonging to an Italian tourist, Giorgio Neri, had been stowed on Missoni’s plane. Neri left Los Roques, Venezuela, for Caracas aboard an airplane that left a few minutes after Missoni’s and had no room left for his bag, which carried equipment to kitesurf. A German tourist found the bag, emptied of its content, on Jan. 10 on the island of Curaçao, but labeled with Neri’s contacts. Once back home in Germany, the tourist e-mailed Neri about his bag, said the Corriere, and the Italian tourist alerted the Missoni family.

Contacted Monday, a Missoni spokeswoman confirmed that the family is aware of the finding.
“They are not drawing any conclusion. This is simply another piece of an already complex puzzle,” said the spokeswoman.
Curaçao is about 124 miles from Los Roques. Corriere speculated that Missoni’s flight was directed south, toward Caracas, and that the ocean currents transported the bag west, ending on the rocks of the island of Curaçao — a new starting point for the search.
