NEW YORK — Adam Lippes is adding some Spanish flair as the contemporary designer has signed an agreement to do a collection for Barcelona-based retailer Mango.

Lippes, who operates the Adam Adam Lippes brand, will produce two apparel collections for women and men for both spring and fall 2009. The Adam for Mango spring-summer line will be available in the brand's stores worldwide, with the exception of the U.S. and Canada, beginning on March 15, 2009. The fall collection will arrive in Mango stores in early September of that year. The collaboration marks the launch of Mango's men's wear business.

"[Mango executives] came to us after the last show because they loved the sensibility of my collection," Lippes said. "I went to Barcelona to meet with them and was blown away by their operations and thought this would be such a great thing."

Lippes said he will travel to Barcelona in late March to begin the design process. For the first collection he will have 12 to 15 complete looks for women and 12 to 15 complete looks for men.

Last year was a big one for Mango. The retailer opened 152 stores throughout the world — 10 in Spain and 142 abroad. Mango operates 1,099 stores in 89 countries. The company made its first foray into New York in November, when it opened in SoHo at 561 Broadway. The stores in the U.S. are called MNG by Mango for trademark reasons.

The Lippes deal marks a second collaboration for the retailer. In September it launched the Penélope & Mónica Cruz for MNG line.
