They Do Make Nice Sunglasses

LOS ANGELES -- It's nice to know that even as the future of industrial capitalism is looking shaky, there's still corporate sponsorship here, and there are still actors who will show up at a lunch for some free sunglasses.

Thursday afternoon, Oliver Peoples and the jewelry company Van Cleef & Arpels cohosted an event at a house in Bel Air and lined the walls with sunglasses designed by the actress Zooey Deschanel. Eric Dane from "Grey's Anatomy" was showing off his new watch. "Look at that!" he said. "I designed that s--t from the ground up! You know I'm going to make sure it winds up on the telly."

Where were his glasses from? we interrupted. "Oliver Peoples," he said. "You know I'm not going to show up wearing Ray-Bans."

Actually, that wasn't quite true. Eliza Dushku from "Bring It On," "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and the new series "Dollhouse," arrived in a pair of Tom Fords. "I didn't get mine yet," she said, referring to the pair (or pairs) of free sunglasses she said would likely be coming "next week."

Meanwhile, someone went up to Zooey Deschanel to congratulate her on her glasses and compliment what she was wearing. "Thanks," she responded, pointing at her earrings. "Van Cleef."

Sometimes, even being an Oscar nominee doesn't get you great service. On Thursday afternoon, the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills was teeming with celebrities from Michael Douglas to Russell Simmons to Ben Silverman. But just after 2 p.m., Frank Langella showed up with his daughter and sat down at a table toward the back. For 15 minutes, he waited patiently for a waiter to show up and ask what he'd like for lunch. None came. Finally, he and his daughter decided to leave. "We have somewhere to be," he said with a shrug.

"Someone should tell the maitre d'," said a person sitting nearby.

Now we have.
