before starting the brand in 2007.
Stints as an intern at Valentino, Marc
Jacobs, Harper's Bazaar and W Magazine brought the FIT graduate to an
accessories editor job at Lucky Magazine and positions as a stylist for
Neiman Marcus and Michael Kors. It was there that Welcher was prompted
to launch Thayer after observing what she describes as a "need for
vibrant, easy pieces that women can playfully mix with their everyday
wardrobe."
The collection of easy separates and dresses began with 13 dresses sold exclusively on shopbop.com. Welcher brought the world of swim to Thayer in spring 2010 and still carries exclusive styles on shopbop.com.
Here the designer talks the best bikini fit, the perfect beach bag and who the Thayer girl is.
How did you get your start in swim design?
We've been doing ready to wear for four years and decided to launch swim last spring. Swim is definitely my favorite collection to design because all I want is to be out in the sun wearing it.
What is the biggest mistake you think
women make when choosing a bikini?
Selecting something too big or too small. I believe fit is always the most important factor while selecting swim.
Is there a swim style you find universally flattering?
Yes, side ties -- they're so forgiving.
What is your favorite beach in the world?
I love the peacefulness of Tulum and Vieques. They're both so easy to get to and yet so remote at the same time.
What do you think is an iconic moment in bikini history?
Brigitte Bardot in St. Tropez throughout the Seventies -- she was so flawless.
The one piece -- yay or nay?
YAY -- absolutely.
What are your beach day essentials?
Sunscreen, hat, sexy cover-up and friends!
How would you describe the Thayer girl?
She's fun and fearless.
What is your ideal beach bag?
Big, unstructured and durable with canvas, leather and some type of attractive details -- bright colors? Sexy hardware? Fun print?
