"We've had a great start to the year with 1 billion page views in January and now 1 million 'likes' on Facebook," editor of People Digital Mark Golin told WWD. "We're particularly excited to see our return from social activity become a meaningful number. We hope to see continued growth this year."
A spokesperson for the celebrity weekly told WWD that Facebook is one of the top 10 referrers of traffic to people.com. The publication counts Facebook initiatives -- such as November's "Sexiest Man Alive" campaign, which added 240,000 "likes" in 10 days -- as paramount in growing the brand's presence on the social medium.
On Twitter, People Digital -- which encompasses @peoplemag, @stylewatchmag, and @peopleenespanol -- boasts over 4 million fans. People Magazine alone has over 2.3 million followers.
AAs a way to show gratitude to readers, the magazine is kicking off the PEOPLE Fan Appreciation Sweeps today. Until 4 p.m., People is giving away 100 free subscriptions. Celebrity gossip enthusiasts, make your way to the "Fans Only" tab at the brand's Facebook page at facebook.com/peoplemag. Additionally, the mag will debut its first Red Carpet Trivia LIVE to coincide with the broadcast of the 83rd Academy Awards at people.com/redcarpettrivia.
