Pretty Hate Machine: More on the Mariqueen Maandig Interview

Two weeks ago I interviewed Trent Reznor's wife Mariqueen Maandig. The two recently formed the band How to Destroy Angels with Reznor's longtime collaborator Atticus Ross and released their debut EP on July 6, the day on which we ran the story.

I had never heard of Mariqueen until I discovered HTDA, but, after some research online, I found she was previously in the L.A. band West Indian Girl as a backup singer, that she was a Playboy Babe of the Month and that she married Trent Reznor soon after leaving her prior band. As far as available facts go, that was pretty much it.

During my phone interview, I found Mariqueen to be sweet and funny and, at six months pregnant, focused on preparing for motherhood. She was also clearly excited about her new project with her husband. I knew the story would cause some Internet buzz because we were the first publication to report her pregnancy, but what I didn't expect was the comment frenzy that followed the article on our Web site, WWD.com.

As of the time of this post, there were 405 comments about her and the story -- everything from the positive, stating she's "fabulous," "totally rad," "cute" and "charming" to the very negative, labeling her a "gold digger" and "untalented" and calling her relationship with Reznor a "hoax." Some comments were so nasty that heated arguments ensued between her detractors and defenders.

It's likely that a lot of the responses did not come from the typical WWD reader, but from other Web sites that had picked up the story. And while I certainly was excited to see such a strong reader response -- one of the strongest we have ever had on the site -- the extreme negativity of some of the comments made me wish people would get back to whatever it is they do on a daily basis. One commenter may have said it best: "The fact that there is so much hatred for her is a testament to the power she has over people. You crazy loons just keep talking about her and keep making her famous!"
