The parties at the Democratic convention  were not exactly roof raisers. Aside from the Kanye West show on Wednesday night, almost nothing that happened at night could match the intensity of the speeches themselves. Partly this is because the Democrats appeared to be on edge, with polls tightening between Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama, and a general malaise fomenting among members of the press, who seem exhausted from chasing Obama for months and months and not having their affections reciprocated.Â
Thankfully, the Vanity Fair/Google party on Thursday night delivered a host of celebs and politicians, from Anne Hathaway and Susan Sarandon to John Kerry, Nancy Kerry and Chuck Schumer. In the time it took to get to the Exdo Center from Invesco Field, you practically could have made it to France and back, but still they showed, throwing the drinks back and munching on sushi until way past midnight. Naturally, the talk centered around Obama's speech, which most agreed was pretty good -- but with some caveats. "I give it an A-," said David Brooks of The New York Times. "I give Hillary an A."
