Hollywood Hair

Drew Barrymore at the Golden Globes.
That hair.

Newly blonde Drew Barrymore channeled Marilyn Monroe at the Golden Globes, and her inflated coif got more slings and arrows than just about anything on the red carpet.

The man who created the look is unrepentant.

Italian hairstylist Giannandrea contended the trend toward the simple has become bland.

"People say sometimes less is more, but to me less is less," he said. With Barrymore's hair recently blonded, Giannandrea turned to Marilyn as his muse. Mix in a bit of "La Dolce Vita"-era movies for inspiration and -- voilą! -- the hairstylist created the 'do many lambasted as a don't.

"With Drew, we always try to do things that are a bit unusual, yet beautiful," he said. "The idea is always to do something that really stands out. She is Hollywood royalty."

As for the opinions of the chattering masses, Giannandrea said he knows best. "I try not to read blogs because there are a lot of mean people out there who are very incompetent in beauty and styling," he said. "I have been working in fashion for 20 years. When I read some bloggers, they are clueless. Actually, I thought it worked out beautifully. Some people debated if it was too much for the Golden Globes, but I thought it is the Golden
Globes and you can have a little more fun with the hair."

Giannandrea, who also was Barrymore's hairstylist for last year's Golden Globes, doesn't take the criticism to heart. "When I do hair, I always have 10 people around me, and not all 10 will like what is done," he said. "I don't take it personally at all."
